Interview with Vera Baird – Prospective Police and Crime Commissioner

As OntheBeat have covered elsewhere, a big shake-up of policing is underway. Elected police and crime commissioners will take responsibility for policing priorities and budgets in all English and Welsh constabularies outside London.

It’s a big and challenging job for one person, especially if not formerly involved in policing. But what qualities should such a person have? And what might the change mean for PCSOs outside London? Will the ideas floated in South Yorkshire gain support?
OntheBeat recently discussed all this with Vera Baird QC, who is currently campaigning for the Labour nomination for Commissioner in Northumbria. The former solicitor-general told us PCSOs powers were at the right level to allow them to play the role of go-between for the community and officers.
